Q: What was your first experience with art? What was your first experience with sculpting?
A: My first experience with art was drawing back in grade school. I could always self teach myself everything. My first experience with sculpting and I just could always grab a piece of clay and sculpt anything.
Q: What made you fall in love with sculpting, compared to other mediums of art?
A: I can make music, paint, draw, and more. However, sculpting in particular allows me to create anything that imagine it ends up being a physical thing that everyone can look at and touch
Q: What is the most important part to what you do? What do you enjoy the most?
A: The most important part to me is making sure that I capture everything in my vision and also paying respect to the subject that my pieces are about I enjoy just being able to just use my hands and whatever materials are available to create whatever I want.
Q: If somebody wanted to purchase some of your pieces, or inquire about one, how could one do so?
A: Contact me through Instagram or email me at whoishonzo@gmail.com
Q: Have you ever had a mentor in your career or somebody you look up to? If so, who is it and what inspires you the most about them?
A: I am inspired by everyone and everything. No specific mentor.
Q: What do you like about being an artist in Philadelphia?
A: It is cool. There is room for everyone here. Especially if you are outside of the norm.
Q: Is there anything you struggle with, when creating? If so, what is it and how do you overcome that?
A: The only thing I struggle with is the opposite of creative artist block. I have so many ideas and I do not have enough time to get it all out. I do not really see it as a struggle but how to overcome it is to focus on specific things that I really want done. Hopefully one day I can do everything that I envision.
Q: What is your favorite sculpture that you made? What makes it your favorite?
A: My favorite is my Basquiat piece. It is constantly evolving and it is never complete. I always keep adding more to it.
Q: Where does the inspiration come from, with whom you sculpt?
A: It hits me out of nowhere. It’s like a voice is telling me to do it. It speaks to me and I have to make it.
Q: What does it mean to have a creative mind to you?
A: It means that you have the spark we all have. It is just a matter of time or what time it is when it hits us. Some of us just have a spark that hits us out of nowhere or you know we are always constantly inspired and some people the spark hits every now. It is like a stroke of genius, we all have that! Having a creative mind is powerful it also means that you have the ability to add to culture
