FRVRFRIDAY - “Time & It’s Order”

The opening shot of “Time & Its Order” shows the singer donned in sunglasses and a black pea coat, his hair piled on top of his head, and his lips moving to the lyrics. His posture is stoic, and the monochromatic black of his outfit stands out against the hazy grey of the background. The video abruptly pivots to strobe lights followed by smooth black and white shots of FRVRFRIDAY’s members. In this opening segment, the camera’s rapid shifts and changing subject matter practically make the viewer struggle to catch up. This effect on the audience visually reflects the way the song itself jumps right in, with no hesitation. In fact, throughout the song, the artists maintain a steady and unrelenting pace. Each verse piles on slant rhyme after slant rhyme, cleverly pairing words like “breathe” and “bleed”; “find me” and “lightly.” Yet buried in the lyrical waves and sexual references is the line encapsulating the crux of the song: “We bound by time and its order.”

A recurring image throughout the music video is that of a young woman basking in eerie, orange light. She wears a form-fitting black dress and toys with her long braided ponytail. What takes this rather typical shot to the next level is the image of the moon as her background. The woman exudes an effortless air that provides a moment of serenity in the otherwise rapidly-moving visual experience that is the video. This jarring contrast hearkens back to the line, “We bound by time and its order”—if anything, the video plays with our perception of time as we watch it. The back-and-forth between strobe lights and slow pans, between blue and orange light, highlights the contradictions in our experience of time. Minutes may sometimes feel like they’re dragging by, but then we blink and weeks have passed. By using camera and lighting effects to depict time’s control over our lives, FRVRFRIDAY adds a layer of visual meaning to their latest track.
