Nomie!, Uraelb - “Sugar Honey”
Like the title suggests, “Sugar Honey,” opens with smooth vocals before the lyrics start pouring in. It’s about the dawn of a new relationship, the potential, and excitement of a crush: “I’m crushin’ on ya, baby.” Nomie! has a buttery smooth voice and sings about her high hopes for a boy. There’s the desire to get to know him, to share parts of themselves, and deepen a connection. The lyrics are ones that I’m sure everyone can relate to; they capture that butterflies-in-the-stomach feeling that we all know too well. There’s a simple and steady drumbeat throughout the song, and it’s the layered echos of higher-pitched background vocals that add dimension to the sound. Midway through the song, we get a rap verse from Uraelb before returning to the chorus from Nomie! Uraelb’s rap gradually speeds up, its relentless rhythm capturing the building nature of this budding relationship: “I know we fit so I won’t quit, just watch as the stars align.” Uraelb’s verse occupies the perspective of the guy—he takes on a more passive role, happy to sit back and watch their dynamic unfold.
The real surprise was the tail end of the song, where the background instrumentals fade and Nomie!’s angelic voice stands alone, slowing in tempo and repeating the now-familiar lyrics from the chorus. It’s an unexpectedly raw and real closing to the song, where we get unfiltered access to the vocals. She almost drops into a talking voice at one point, her volume sinking for a moment to just above a whisper, practically faltering. She repeats, “I like that, I like that.” For me, this closer adds a unique touch to the R&B vibe of the song, leaving you with a reminder of the vulnerability and exposure we all feel when exploring a new relationship. There’s hope and expectation in her voice, and even maybe a hint of fear—that it won’t work out or that her feelings won’t be reciprocated. At just 21 years old, Nomie! has shown us with “Sugar Honey,” that she’s one to look out for.
