Zehailah - “Welcome to the Party”

The backing track of Zehailah’s January 2022 release, “Welcome to the Party,” remains consistent in its lightness and tempo. Different beats are layered over top, infusing the song with a variety that juxtaposes the changing scenes in the video. To contrast this relative simplicity in the background, Zehailah’s voice takes the foreground. She alternates seamlessly between a higher-pitched, feather-light tone and a bold, confident one. This range is reflected lyrically in the line, “They say sad girls have more fun.” With both her performance and persona in the video, Zehailah seeks to prove this lyric right. The line is immediately followed by the words, “Well my life is a party.”

The two major recurring themes in the video reflect this dynamic. In one narrative thread, Zehailah struts into a conference room, making direct eye contact with the camera. She’s surrounded by other women, some of whom are making calls or looking at laptops, engrossed in their work. In contrast to the business-casual atmosphere of this scene, we later see Zehailah with platinum blonde hair and wearing a two-piece pink sweatsuit, tossing dollar bills into the air. She is again surrounded by friends, although instead of poring over computers they’re bouncing pink balloons and licking frosting off a cake. The video switches more quickly between the two scenes towards the end, as the words “Welcome to the Party” reverberate over the same constant background sound of the song’s beginning. Zehailah’s ability to straddle the line between work and play—both visually and lyrically—encapsulates perfectly her artistic range.
